DISCRETION: “Recognizing and avoiding words, actions and attitudes which would bring undesirable consequences.”
Proverbs 22:3 ” A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.”
Each week at Life House we try to focus on a character word. This week is Discretion (vs. simplemindedness). Discretion causes people to stop and consider what will happen if they take a certain step of action. If there are negative consequences, discretion dismisses the idea. If there are positive results, discretion prompts people to continue.
Discretion also weighs the immediate consequences of words and actions against their long term outcomes. Though the immediate results may be humiliating or embarrassing, the short term is small and brief when compared to the enduring consequences of wrong choices. Few people regret thing that they have NOT said or done. Many people regret the things they HAVE said and done.
